Abstract
Abstract
Relations between Iranians and Arabs constitute a significant aspect of Iranian history. a factor that enriches research in this field is the reconstruction of the mindset that guided the actions of historical figures. Undertaking such research is essential because a proper understanding of the perspectives and attitudes of both the Sasanians and the Arabs allows for a true comprehension of the logic governing their interactions. Indeed, other historical studies in this area can draw upon this research to analyze the underlying logic of Sasanian-Arab relations. To examine this issue—drawing on concepts from political sociology, employing a historical-explanatory approach, and relying on library research—we will demonstrate the understanding upon which the Sassanids formulated their policies to subjugate the Arabs, as well as the perspective from which the Arabs acquiesced to those policies. The findings of this study indicate that the Sasanians viewed the Arabs as lacking both a religion (social norms) and a state (kingship) capable of providing structure to their lives. Consequently, in the absence of such institutions, the Sasanians saw the use of raw power as the only means of subjugating them; for their part, the Arabs—having on several occasions paid a heavy price in blood for defying Sasanian policies—submitted to the Sasanian monarch, acknowledging his superiority. Thus, the Arabs perceived the Sasanian king as a symbol of wealth, power, majesty, and political legitimacy, and a connection with the monarch could serve as a source of prestige and honor among their own people.
